How to become a nurse

Australia currently has two levels of nurses:

• Registered Nurses (known as Division 1 nurses in Victoria)
• Enrolled Nurses (known as Division 2 nurses in Victoria)

All nurses must be registered to practice with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Please visit the registration page for further details.

The two levels of nursing differ in relation to responsibilities.

Registered Nurse
To become a Registered (Division 1) Nurse you need to complete a Bachelor of Nursing, which is available at most Australian universities. For information on courses available please click here.

Enrolled Nurse
To become an Enrolled (Division 2) Nurse you need to complete a Diploma in Nursing or a Certificate IV in Nursing at a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) or vocational institution. This may vary between Australian state/territories. For information on courses available please click here.
